what it is

What Is Functional Testing?

Functional testing is the practice of verifying that every feature of your software works according to its requirements — that each input produces the correct output, each user flow completes end to end, and each business rule behaves as specified. It is the umbrella discipline of QA: where most other testing types narrow in on one quality, functional testing answers the core question across the whole product — does it actually do what it is supposed to?

QACraft's functional testing services validate features against requirements across web, mobile and API, combining manual testing for new and exploratory work with automation for stable, repeatable flows. Every test traces back to a requirement, so coverage is provable rather than assumed.

This is the hub for our functional QA work. Several focused disciplines sit underneath it — regression, cross-browser, compatibility, acceptance, accessibility, exploratory and API testing — each with a dedicated team and a deep-dive page linked below.

our services

What We Offer

Functional testing is broad, so we break it into focused disciplines. Each is a service in its own right — follow the links to go deep on the one you need.

Regression Testing

Re-verify existing features on every change so new work never quietly breaks what already worked. Explore regression →

Cross-Browser Testing

Confirm features behave consistently across Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Explore cross-browser →

Compatibility Testing

Validate your software across devices, OS versions, screen sizes and configurations. Explore compatibility →

User Acceptance Testing (UAT)

Validate that the software meets real business needs and acceptance criteria before launch. Explore UAT →

Accessibility Testing

Ensure features are usable by everyone and meet WCAG standards. Explore accessibility →

Exploratory Testing

Skilled, unscripted testing that finds the defects rigid scripts miss. Explore exploratory →

API Testing

Verify the services behind the UI return the right data, status codes and errors. Explore API testing →

Flexible engagement models

Dedicated QA Pod

A functional QA pod embedded in your team, priced by features kept verified rather than hours. Best for continuous coverage that grows release by release.

Staff Augmentation

One or more QA engineers who plug into your existing process and tools under your leadership — scaled up or down monthly.

Fixed-Scope Release Validation

A defined feature set or release validated end to end against its requirements — one agreed scope, one quote.

tools & frameworks

Tools & Frameworks We Use

Tool choice is decided in Phase 1, against your process, stack and CI — never by default. Functional QA spans test management, traceability and automation:

Jira

Where requirements, user stories and defects live — the backbone of traceability.

Xray

Requirement-to-test traceability and coverage reporting inside Jira.

Zephyr

Test management and execution tracking integrated with your backlog.

TestRail

Structured test-case management, runs and coverage metrics.

Selenium

Cross-browser automation for stable, repeatable functional flows.

Playwright

Fast, reliable end-to-end automation for modern web apps.

Postman

Functional verification of the APIs behind your features.

BrowserStack

Real-device and cross-browser coverage at scale.

why automate

Why Functional Testing Matters

A feature that "looks done" is not the same as a feature that works for every user, on every path, against what was actually agreed. Functional testing closes that gap — and here is what it changes:

Features work as specified

Every requirement is verified, so what ships matches what was agreed — not just what was demoed.

Catch defects before users

Broken flows, bad inputs and missed edge cases are found in QA, not in production or a support ticket.

Provable requirement coverage

Traceability means "did we test that?" always has a concrete answer — important for audits and stakeholders.

Better user experience

Validating real user journeys end to end means the product feels right, not just technically correct.

Fewer production incidents

Catching functional defects early cuts costly hotfixes, rollbacks and reputational damage.

A foundation for automation

A solid functional baseline is what makes regression and broader automation worthwhile.

our process

Our Functional Testing Process

Every engagement follows the same disciplined path — and produces a concrete artifact at the end of each phase, so you always know exactly what you are getting.

PHASE 01 · WEEK 1

Understand Requirements

We turn your specs, user stories and acceptance criteria into a clear, testable list — and map each requirement so nothing goes unverified.

→ artifact: requirement-traceability matrix
PHASE 02 · WEEK 1–2

Design Test Cases

We write functional test cases for every requirement — positive, negative and edge — prioritised by risk so the features that matter get the deepest coverage.

→ artifact: reviewed functional test suite
PHASE 03 · ONGOING

Execute & Validate

We run the suite across web, mobile and API — manually and automated where it pays off — logging defects with clear reproduction steps.

→ artifact: per-feature results + defect reports
PHASE 04 · ONGOING

Report & Retest

We report coverage against requirements, verify fixes, and re-run on every release so a passing feature stays passing.

→ artifact: coverage report + regression pass

ai-assisted

AI-Assisted Functional Testing

AI speeds up functional testing without taking the wheel. We use it to turn requirements and user stories into draft test cases, spot coverage gaps in a traceability matrix, and prioritise which features to test on a given change.

Every AI-suggested case is reviewed by a QA engineer before it counts — AI proposes, a human verifies. For the automated and self-healing layer, see our AI-powered test automation services.

industries

Industries We Serve

We provide functional testing for teams across regulated and high-traffic industries, where a feature that quietly misbehaves is a real-world problem.

why us

Why Choose QACraft for Functional Testing

Teams choose QACraft when they want QA engineers who own outcomes — not a body shop billing hours.

Requirement-traceable

Every test maps to a requirement, so coverage is provable and "did we test that?" always has an answer — not a shrug.

You own everything

Test cases, suites, traceability matrices and reports live with you from day one. No black boxes, no lock-in.

Risk-based, not box-ticking

We test the features that carry the most risk the hardest, instead of spreading effort evenly across things that do not matter.

Fast, focused kickoff

We move in days, not quarters — typically a traceability matrix in the first week, so you see structure early.

Flexible engagement models

Embed a dedicated QA pod, augment your team, or take a fixed-scope release validation — scaled to your needs.

A full-stack QA partner

Functional testing connects to your regression, API and automation testing under one team — joined-up, not stitched together from vendors.

straight answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is functional testing?

Functional testing verifies that each feature of your software behaves according to its requirements — that inputs produce the right outputs, flows work end to end, and the system does what the spec says. It answers one question for every requirement: does this actually work as intended?

What's the difference between functional and non-functional testing?

Functional testing checks what the system does (features, flows, business rules against requirements). Non-functional testing checks how well it does it — speed, security, accessibility, compatibility. We cover both; this page is the functional umbrella, and several spokes below go deep on specific areas.

Do you do manual or automated functional testing?

Both, deliberately. New features and exploratory work are tested by humans; stable, repeatable flows are automated so every release re-verifies them fast. The split is decided by risk and change frequency — see our automation testing services for the automated layer.

How do you ensure full requirement coverage?

We build a requirement-traceability matrix that maps every requirement to the test cases that verify it. Nothing ships unmapped, and coverage gaps are visible — so "did we test that?" always has a concrete, provable answer.

Do you test web, mobile and API?

Yes — functional testing spans the whole product. We validate web and mobile UIs and the APIs behind them, so a feature is verified at every layer, not just on the surface.

Which tools do you use?

For traceability and test management we use Jira with Xray or Zephyr and TestRail; for automation, Selenium and Playwright; for API checks, Postman; and BrowserStack for cross-browser and device coverage. The exact stack is chosen against your process in Phase 1.
